In her 17 October "Rock Talk" blog, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Deputy Director for Extramural Research Sally Rockey asks the research community, "How do you think we should manage science in fiscally challenging times?"
Possible options for reallocating NIH resources such as "limiting the number of research program grant awards per investigator, the total amount of awards per investigator, the size of awards, or the amount of salary support paid by NIH" were mentioned. A set of slides concerning NIH extramural grant support and alternative scenarios is available. Rockey invites the extramural research community to provide comments or suggest other ideas either via her blog or through a dedicated e-mail account:
