International Board Strategic Plan: 2009–2013 Print E-mail
International Board (IB) Chair Keith Klugman and International Affairs Director Lily Schuermann hosted an IB Strategic Planning Retreat at ASM Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, 1 August 2009. Maria Freire, President, Lasker Foundation, and Roger Glass, Director, Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, delivered thought-provoking presentations to retreat participants and invited guests at a reception on the evening of Friday, 31 July 2009.

With the elevation to Board status in July 2008, the IB became a voting member of ASM's Council Policy Committee (CPC). Due to this new role within ASM, and the completion the 2005-2009 IB Strategic Plan, it was necessary to develop an updated strategic plan and mission that outlined the Board's goals and objectives and further defined the IB's role within ASM. The new mission of the 2009-2013 IB Strategic Plan is "The International Board develops, sustains and promotes the global activities of the American Society for Microbiology."

The mission of the IB will be accomplished through the integrated implementation of the following six goals: (1) Promote the microbiological sciences worldwide by providing a diverse array of educational programs and services. (2) Develop collaborative relationships with national and international scientific organizations worldwide. (3) Ensure that the products and services of ASM effectively serve its international membership. (4) Build capacity of clinical/public health microbiology laboratories internationally through externally funded projects. (5) Ensure that ASM harnesses its scientific expertise to impact microbiologically related international policy. (6) Develop an ASM marketing strategy that ensures effective international outreach.

The IB implements these goals through the activities of its three standing committees, the International Educations Committee (IEC), the International Membership Committee (IMC), and the International Laboratory Capacity Building Committee (LabCap).
