In February, the Administration released its proposed budget for FY 2011.
Preliminary highlights for research and public health programs include:
● National Institutes of Health (NIH): $32.2 billion for an overall increase of 3.2%
● National Science Foundation (NSF): $7.4 billion for an overall increase of 8%
● Department of Energy-Office of Science (DOE): $5.1 billion for an overall increase of 4.4%. Basic energy sciences saw a substantial increase of 12%, while Biological and Environmental research was increased by 3.8%.
● U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA): The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) received $1.5 billion, a 0.5% increase, while the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) was funded at $429 million, a significant 64% increase over the FY 2010 level.
● Food and Drug Administration (FDA): $4 billion for FY 2011, a 23% increase over the FY 2010 level.
● Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC): The CDC received $6.6 billion overall, a 2% decrease from FY 2010. Infectious Diseases however, increased 3%, and Preparedness, Detection, and Control of Infectious Diseases increased by 14%.
