ASM Endorses Friends of VA Research FY 2011 Budget Recommendation Print E-mail
ASM endorsed the Friends of VA Medical Care and Health Research (FOVA) fiscal year (FY) 2011 budget recommendation of $1 billion for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical and Prosthetic Research Program and VA research facilities. Specifically, FOVA supports $700 million in FY 2011 for the VA Medical and Prosthetic Research Program and $300 million for VA research facilities. FOVA's $700 million funding recommendation for the VA Medical and Prosthetic Research Program is $120 million over the FY 2010 appropriation. The program needs at least $20 million, a 3.3% inflationary increase over FY 2010, to keep VA research funding at currentservices levels, and an additional $100 million, beyond inflationary coverage to support new VA research initiatives. The recommended $300 million for VA research facilities will bring the VA's research infrastructure into the 21st century. VA research facilities are in need of upgrade, repair or replacement of even the most basic research space and equipment, including ventilation, electrical supply, and plumbing projects.

FOVA is a coalition of more than 80 national academic, medical, and scientific societies, voluntary health and patient advocacy associations, and industry that advocate appropriate funding for the health programs that serve the nations veter ans. Among its many activities, FOVA members regularly brief members of Congress on the funding needs of health care and research at the VA, raise awareness of VA's medical care and research programs, and host special events that highlight VA research successes.
