On 8 March, Vickie Baselski, chair of the ASM Public and Scientific Affairs Board Committee on Professional Affairs, represented ASM at the Coordinating Council on the Clinical Laboratory Workforce (CCCLW) meeting in Rosemont, Ill.
A report was provided on a Health Professions Network webinar regarding the coming decade for health professions. Discussion followed on how laboratories and heath care organizations determine the "optimal" mix of lower- to higher-skilled staff and how this varies geographically. An update provided by Rick Panning of the Minnesota Healthcare and Education Industry Partnership focused on a presentation made to the Minnesota Hospital Association Board regarding the value in providing clinical internship sites to support Clinical Laboratory Science and/or Medical Laboratory Technician programs inMinnesota. A report on Abbott's Labs Are Vital (LAV) program was also provided.
Baselski participated in a workgroup called "improving the professional profile," charged with promoting the clinical laboratory profession. The workgroup discussed promoting the laboratorians' role on the health care team and developing advocacy and leadership skills. The workgroup is in the process of gathering career development resources from member organizations; Baselski reported that ASM submitted a list of ASM career development and training activities including information on certification, postdoctoral training opportunities, publications, journals, meetings and audioconferences, and other reference tools such as "Ask It" and ASM's career portal. Other workgroups focused on effective recruitment and retention strategies and increasing awareness of laboratory professions.
