ASM Coalition Efforts on Health Care Reform Print E-mail

ASM is a member of the Clinical Laboratory Coalition's Health Care Reform Task Force and assisted in the drafting of a document outlining clinical laboratory-related health care reform principles. The Coalition document urges policy makers to adequately address and incorporate the important role that laboratory medicine and the professionals performing laboratory tests play in the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of disease. The Coalition sent the document to Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Nancy-Ann Min DeParle, Director of the White House Office of Health Reform. The Coalition also sent the document to members of the House and Senate Committees that have jurisdiction over health care reform policy, including the Senate Finance Committee, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, and the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health. ASM staff member Suzy Leous participated in Coalition meetings with Capitol Hill staff to discuss the Coalition's health care reform principles. The Coalition plans to develop additional laboratory-related health care reform fact sheets as issues arise, especially as House and Senate Committees begin drafting and discussing legislation to reform the health care system.
