The ASM Lecturer for the 110th General Meeting is Stephen Quake, cochair of the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University's School of Engineering. Quake is a strong proponent of "lab-on-a-chip" technology, and has been exploring applications of it in functional genomics, genetic analysis, and protein design.
Quake's interests lie at the crossroads of physics, biology, and biotechnology. Over the last five years, he and his team have been keenly interested in understanding the physics and biological applications of microfluidic technology. His group pioneered the development of Microfluidic Large Scale Integration (LSI), demonstrating the first integrated microfluidic devices with thousands of mechanical valves. This technology is helping to herald large scale automation of biology at the nanoliter scale.
The General Meeting Program will begin on Sunday, 23 May 2010, and the ASM Lecture is scheduled for Sunday in the early evening.
110th General Meeting Programming Under Way. The collection of colloquia ideas for the 110th General Meeting began in March of 2009. Then, over the last General Meeting held in Philadelphia, Pa., Division Officers began discussion of the symposia portion of the program. After that meeting, ASM members were solicited for topical ideas in contribution to the planning of the program. Officers were asked to submit completed session topics with speaker information to the General Meeting Program Committee by early August.
Pre-Meeting Workshops are determined by ASM's Professional Development Committee. ASM members were also able to propose topics in July over the Web, which are now under consideration by the Committee. Workshop descriptions will appear on the meeting website in November. Workshops precede the General Meeting and are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 22 and 23 May 2010.
Abstract submission will open in November for the meeting, with the deadline for each ASM Divisional Group set for mid-January. Information on how to submit abstracts is on the General Meeting website. Student Travel Grants are available and grant information is also posted at the website. ASM Members-Only Registration will open online in early November. The Preliminary Program Viewer will also be available on the same date.

The 110th General Meeting will be held at the San Diego Convention Center, which is a waterfront convention center situated on San Diego Bay. The General Meeting was last held on the West Coast in year 2000, so ASM is looking forward to this event. Please mark 23 to 27 May, the dates of the meeting, on your 2010 calendar. ASM looks forward to your participation at our next gathering of the Society.
