ASM Selects Congressional Science Fellow for 2009–2010 Print E-mail

 

The ASM Congressional Science Fellowship has been awarded to Jennifer A. McPartland for 2009-2010.  mcpartlandMcPartland will work on the staff of a member of Congress or congressional committee during her fellowship year.

McPartland received her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Chicago in December of 2008. Since then she has continued to work in the Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology Department of the University of Chicago in the laboratory of Dr. Lucia Rothman- Denes researching coliphage N4. McPartland is interested in issues related to adequate federal funding for the sciences, food safety, and combating infectious diseases. "Support for research is necessary to prevent and treat threats to public health including foodborne illnesses, MRSA, and tuberculosis," McPartland states. "I plan to pursue a career in policy, utilizing my science background to translate complex scientific issues into terms that both federal officials and the public can understand."

ASM has supported Congressional Fellows since 1977. The ASM Congressional Science Fellowship Selection Committee selects a postdoctoral to mid-career microbiologist to spend one year on the staff of an individual congressman, congressional committee, or with some other appropriate organizational unit of Congress. Prospective Fellows must be citizens of the United States, be members of ASM for at least one year, and must have completed their Ph.D. by the time the fellowship begins in September.
