Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduates Print E-mail

 

Fifteen years have lapsed since a major study  to revamp the ASM Curriculum Guidelines for  Microbiology was put forth. Since this time,  several national reports were published calling  for sweeping changes in teaching biology for  the 21st century.
 
Career Development Grants for Postdoctoral Women Print E-mail

 

The ASM Membership Board is pleased to announce  the recipients of the 2011 Career Development  Grants for Postdoctoral Women. The  recipients are Sinem Beyhan of the University  of California, San Francisco (Anita Sil's laboratory),  Ashley Shade of Yale University (Jo Handelsman's  laboratory), and Laura E. Williams  of Duke University (Jennifer Wernegreen's laboratory).

ASM Represented at National  Student and Educator Meetings  in Summer 2011    

The strategic directions of the ASM Education  Board include collaborating with  national organizations to promote biology  education at all levels. In summer 2011,  the Board sponsored the Society's participation  in the following conferences for  science students and educators.

XXIII National Congress of the  Spanish Society for Microbiology    

The Spanish Society for Microbiology  (SEM) held its XXIII National Congress  on 11-14 July 2011 in the beautiful and  historic academic city of Salamanca,  Spain, with more than 500 attendants.  President of the Organizing Committee,  Ángel Domníguez, combined a broad  range of topics presented through lectures,  seminars, roundtables, and posters from  research groups across the country and  abroad.

Deceased Members

Ronald Bentley,  professor Emeritus  of Biological Chemistry,  University of  Pittsburgh, died on  6 June 2011 at the  age of 89 of complications  of kidney  failure.
