ASM once again conducted its periodic telephone and observational surveys of handwashing behavior in August 2010.
Observational surveys recorded the highest ever percentage of people washing their hands after using a public restroom since the surveys began in 1996. In the observational surveys, 85% of those observed washed hands after using a public restroom, as opposed to 77% total the last time the survey was done, in 2007. For men, the total was 77%, up from 66% in 2007; for women it was 93%, up from 88%. A new downloadable brochure about handwashing and detailed information about current and past surveys is available at www.washup.org
