Clean Hands Campaign Results Best Ever

ASM once again conducted its periodic telephone and observational surveys of handwashing behavior in August 2010. Observational surveys recorded the highest ever percentage of people washing their hands after using a public restroom since the surveys began in 1996. In the observational surveys, 85% of those observed washed hands after using a public restroom, as opposed to 77% total the last time the survey was done, in 2007. For men, the total was 77%, up from 66% in 2007; for women it was 93%, up from 88%. A new downloadable brochure about handwashing and detailed information about current and past surveys is available at www.washup.org.
